Wednesday, March 22, 2006 Life. According to statistics from Geohive again at the time of publication, we have an average lifespan of 80 years ( for easier calculation, let's just assume such a number). Think: "80 years, what's the big deal?" Let me shine some light on this issue. In the society we are dwelling in, the first 20 or so of our years will be spent on learning, education so to speak. That's A QUARTER of our life gone already! Now let's jump to the last few decades of our life first. Suppose the retirement age is about 65. Using a simple mathematical technique : subtraction! : 80-65 = 15. The last 15 years of your life, you will be retired. This means that you are back to being a dependent again, a mature one albeit. In the last 15 years of your life, you have no income, unlikely you will be able to get a job due to the highly intensive stress of the workplace which is unsuitable for your bones. By then, you would have either a comfortable life or a lousy one. Furthermore, since you belong to the world of the living, in your retirement period, you still have expenses to bear. Of course you can rely on your offspring but just to make matters more deplorable, just assume that you are alone, old and somewhat pathetically useless. To make matters even worse, in the event you are hospitalised...HOW?!?! Typical answer: Die lor... -.- Let's now return the period where your age is between 25-60 years of age. This interval is chosen to allow for some untimely events which might take up YEARS of your life. In this period of 35 (60-25) years, you will be working (perhaps for the minimum wage?), slogging away to pay for your lavish lifestyle, look after your parents, family, expenses, transport cost, meals and other odds and ends. What must you accomplish in this 35 years? Basically, you must earn enough at least to cover your university fees, your debts and your retirement. For once you are retired, you are basically living from hand-to-mouth (pray hard that you don't get hand-foot-mouth disease). In spite of all this, while you are slogging this 35 years, there is still current expenditure to endure since you are among the living! Now, it might seem very bleak since the point I am putting across is : Your life is so damn short and you spend most of your time trying to live it. Note that the phrase is "trying to live it", not "live it". Kraven the Hunter once said "... my life is to be like a firework, short but go out with a bang!" Similarly, we should live life to the fullest each day! No use mugging like mad only to die in the end amidst your materials. No doubt that studying hard is so important that it is ****ing important (to emphasise its importance) for a lucrative future, but then also must know your limits. To end on a note, for all the confused dodos out there who have no idea what you want in life, perhaps the following speech will aid you : LINK . |
